The BatteryBug is a nifty, though perhaps overpriced, electronic gizmo that is allowing me to keep an older battery in a car that MUST start, every time (read: wife's car). One minor puzzlement: the percentage reading the device gives is never identified as a percentage of WHAT, either in the directions or on the company website. But the acceptable threshold values are clearly noted, so that doesn't affect the usefulness of the device.

If for your own personal reasons you've chosen to preserve a favorite car from the recent past you already know there is a need for a tool like the Actron. With out realtime data streams or OBDC at hand and the tools to access them, your last and best option will always be a reliable VOM/Dwell meter and a timeing light. When all is said and done these tools provide more setup information than most European cars useing Robert Bosch fuel management systems. harbor freight version: take reading, multiply by 50 & divide by number of cylinders, i'm not joking! (had to call them this isn't in the manual) and it has a selector for cylinders.

actron version: multiply reading by 10

also includes manual on how to troubleshoot engine sensors. has been very helpful.

highly recommended for any shadetree mechanic!

 "Vector VEC008" 2009-09-20

I bought this to monitor the depth of discharge of 12v batteries connected to solar panels, as the batteries discharged through an inverter to provide AC power. I had been using a multimeter before the Vector, then recharged the 9v multimeter rechargeable batteries from the same system when the meter wore out the 9v.



For my application, this Vector meter required a female DC connection - female CLA to battery clips - so it drained its own small operating voltage from the discharging batteries but that was hardly noticeable. The fact that it is very delicate and its reading did not match the multimeter reading made me go back to the multimeter. The multimeter gives me more accuracy with an extra number to the right of the decimal point and it is more durable. I did read another post about taking the unit apart to adjust the pot. I did this and the Vector voltage now matches the multimeter voltage but there goes the Vector warranty.



It does what it says it does, might be of more use in a vehicle, and arrived earlier than expected in mint condition. A nice feature is that it is back-lit at night but remember that it is delicate.

This is well made for a non-commercial use product. Others have claimed that it is made of cheap plastic and it will break easily. I'm sure it will break like any plastic product if it's battered and mishandled. I've tested it in three of our family vehicles and it works VERY well. There have been NO signs of a tendency to crumble or break when handled as someone described in a previous review. I like the way it tilts depending on the angle needed to view the digital readout and lighted display. This device is like having a medical thermometer around the house, available when needed. You may not use it very often but it's nice to have available. So why should it be "robust" and ruggedly built? Maybe there should be a rugged upgraded model available for the service station owner who would use it constantly. Buy it. It works well and it's a great bargain!

I needed a basic Dwell/Tachometer to tune my car from the '60s and this one works just fine. Only complaints are the allegator clips you use to hook the unit to the car are very flimsy. I suspect they will need to be replaced at some point. You need to read the dial carefully. There is no 4/6/8 cylinder switch, so you have to be careful to read the correct scale for your car. So, decent value for the price but not a knockout value.

Overall, this is a good meter for home and shop use, especially for the low price. I was looking for a meter that would properly test batteries, and selected this one after a bit of research. I'm very happy with its performance, and would buy the same meter again.



PRO's: The meter has dedicated settings to test many battery types under load. Most general purpose meters can't do this. This is the perfect meter if you want to test your rechargeable batteries, and still want other more general meter functions. The ranges will be more than sufficient for most people. The continuity beeper is loud enough to be heard in noisy environments, which can be a problem with some other meters. The display is plenty big enough to see easily, even with my old eyes.



CON's: The ACV tops out at 500v, and the probe wires are only rated for 600v, fine for most uses, but not for 3-phase motors. The soft plastic clips that are supposed to hold the probes to the side of the meter are pretty useless.



A good meter, don't let the low price put you off as it's better than many more expensive meters.

All references to this unit on the web state that it is 10 x 6 x 1 inches in size (monstrous) but in fact it is rather compact at 5.5 inches long by 2.5 inches wide by 1 inch thick. It hinges in the middle so you can position it for any vehicle. Highly recommended.
